Thank you for this. This made me realize that I was so absolutely right about the End of TV and so Absolutely Wrong about EoE.

So idk if this is silly of me, but I was really into rule of rose so I just immidiately assumed the promise was similar to the one in that. Something like, "Promise to never forget each other." or "To always find each other. In this life or the next." Something like that.

Well this video is 1 year old but sure I can type out my theory too. One important thing is that I played the most recent version which apparently includes a few changes, but important ones. I agree more with SulMatul in that the events in the game don't physically happen, but I also disagree with her conclusions. First of all I do believe biorresonance is a lesser ability that some people present it as, something more akin to that hyper empathy with maybe some other connections to "mystical" or "psychic" skills like divination, remote viewing and synchronicity. Nothing remotey capable of bending reality over entire worlds though. We also know it might have something to do with radio waves and all the details about the Replika creating process. That given, I think what physically happened, all previous to the game events, was "Lilith" (never really realized before this video it wasn't confirmed the woman in the photo was her) getting used as LSTR template by the state, mouring the death of her squadmates during the Vinetan war and even dying herself, the death of the Itou twins (probably in a war too, maybe even the Vinetan one), the Penrose journey, putting Ariane in cryosleep, and Elster malfunctioning BUT not quite dying yet. Now for the game itself: what we'd have is both Ariane and Elster at the gates of death, the first in a catatonic state and the second probably with a terrible memory fragmentation problem due to both her physical state and her Persona degradation. The game happens when both their broken minds connect via a bioresonant feedback loop, and Elster starts experiencing the events of the game, her system often failing and rebooting (each time you either die or achieve an ending - at least the three regular ones plus the fake one - then start a new game). The appearance, events and even characters of this constant loop are a result of Elster's, Ariane's and Lilith's memories, imaginations, traumas and specifically in Ariane's case visions and dreams, melded together by a failing operating system. The only constant, the thing that keeps Elster rebooting instead of simply shutting down and dying, is the promise. So in this dream, or maybe more accurately reconstruction, she looks for someone, who first thinks is Alina due to Lilith's remanent memories, then remembers is Ariane. Some aspect of herself manifested through Adler also looks for Falke, and something similar happens with Isa, who looks for her sister. Problem is, the thing she's really trying to find isn't a person, it's the promise. That's what keeps her going, so whenever she or any other of the characters is looking for a person they won't find what they're supposed to find. I think the key in all of this is Lilith, who knows the person she looks for, Alina, is dead. Every "seeker" who gets close to the person they seek ends up with their right eye damaged just like Lilith. At some point Elster's subconsciousness even realizes via the Adler persona that this road is a farce destined to fail time and time again. The three endings themselves, how they play out and how they're apparently related to the way you play the game I interpret as different conclusions to specific iterations of the loop depending on how well Elster managed to separate and understand her own personality in the middle of all this mental chaos she's experiencing. Importantly, I don't think she fulfills the promise in the Promise ending. I think she plays out what she infers from the loop is the promise, not actually remembering the real one. Yes, Ariane thanks her, she appreciates the end of her suffering, but first she had written that she didn't really want to die, and second it doesn't sound like the kind of promise a person like Ariane, for what we know about her and how she was from beginning to end, would make Eslter do. So what's the real promise, and how can Elster remember it? By noticing subtle details, finding the keys, symbols for the three people in her mind, Ariane, herself and Lilith, and opening the safe with the code from the radio signal, which I believe to be the way the bioresonant connection manifests itself. What she finds inside allows her to finally remember what her connection to Ariane was about, not only who she was herself but who they were together, and find the Artifact, the Promise, to dance together again, which they do not physically but in their connected minds. The Artifact ending being the only one where something happens between Elster's death and the credits might also indicate the end of the loop. All of this like every other single theory I've seen has its holes. The biggest ones would be Falke and Isa I think. For Falke, the best I can do within this explanation is that she'd be a persona created by maybe Lilith slowly realizing she's been copied into a Replika. It would kind of explain why she's the biggest obstacle between Elster and Ariane, she kinda knows Elster's destined for failure following the path where they meet, but I can't figure out what her connection to Ariane would be and it's clear there's one given the similarities and comparisons. Something similar for Isa, who's also often compared sometimes to Ariane, sometimes to Elster. I think she could represent a more desperate, hopeless and fearful part of them both, with her fruitless search that ends in premature death. That was a long comment. All in all, I believe for all its references to Chambers and Lovecraft, the best reference Signalis does to the cosmic horror genre is the fact that the more you try to understand it the more it drags you into the pit of madness.

Maybe I'm in the minority but for me I see Eva as:Nothing matters, so everything matters, every project set in its myltiverse from the anime to the movies to the manga to the novels to the games have their own unique takes, none of them really line up but have something to say about the world, characters and themes. Some make sense, some don't but its always a wild ride that has impressive ideas and designs getting me thinking at the very least, for me thats all that matters just look at everything or nothing, in the end we can choose our own endings they sure did.

It is several months after this video came out, but I would one, like to thank you for pushing me to watch Evangelion for myself and two, curse you for making it so obvious what is wrong with the movie in terms of its lack of focus on the women in it. Now whenever I watch another analysis video of EoE and see someone trying to defend Shinji choking Asuka, I just see red and walk away because they are focusing on the perpetrator and not the victim. That is my main critique of the movie as well. Thank you for your video, you are doing amazing work, but also curse you for the gift of knowledge.

It's not a sad ending necessarily, or a happy ending. It's a hopeful ending. Shinji might still be traumatized and depressed, and Asuka may be disgusted by his actions, but they get each other now. And that's the first step that they needed to take the whole time.

i would personally love a video on morrowind. too many people have not played it or their takes on it are completely surface level. also my wife needs a trans woman with a video essay to explain the gameplay and plot to actually get into any video game at this point so i would appreciate someone who can do that for me bc i am failing miserably to communicate why i love it so much

It’s tough being a Shinji fan. This movie did not need to exist and he did not need to do such outrageous acts. 😭 that transformation into that god-like Eva was cool as fuck tho

Daniil has always struck me as deeply tragic in a way the other characters aren't exactly, because not only is the whole death cure likely never going to exist, but if he did succeed...would it actually make anything better? A world without death will rapidly run out of space for new life. And if it's only for a chosen few? A person who cannot die wouldn't stop being human, exactly, but they would stop being an animal. The drawbacks of immortal rulers and mortals being ruled are so obvious they're a cornerstone of scifi and fantasy alike. We cannot move forward without losing the past, in a very literal sense.

They should have explained more clearly what was going on in the ending, 2 episodes of reused animations and inner monologues with basically nothing else isn't exactly, good. The backlash was maybe extreme but also pretty understandable not to like the original ending. Just because people were mean about it doesn't mean they weren't right, the og ending kinda sucks and is unsatisfying it leaves too much unexplained too EOE movie is a much more fitting ending to the series.

The more I listened to your analysis I think I understand now how despite loving the story, visual, characters, theme and lore, I kinda hate it because of how the story prioritizes meta-narrative to fans. Rather than put more emphasis on the story and characters, they decided to have a conversation with crazy otakus who, to be fair, probably don’t care about anything other than themselves anyway. The end of evagalion seems off to me considering how Shinji acts and it makes completely sense for him to be how if it is meant to be how they view an audience. I lost respect quite a bit for that because the original series are wonderful and vulnerable. It’s too spiteful for no reason and it almost parallels to Shinji’s story who hate himself too much and would rather be self destructive by asking for any attention than actually acknowledge value of himself as it is. Oh well…

Hey I think this video comes from a place of love and I admire your work ethic. But I find problems with some parts of this video. I feel personally most of the characters do things that we can’t defend in this show and that’s ok. I get your anger but at certain points I feel you need to calm down. Everyone perspective is different and I respect yours.

I only focused on Lara, Bad Grief, Sticky and the rest of the "big 12" (I think they were 12 at least). I hope they make the storyline for the bachelor and changeling at least as good as the haruspex story was. Hope this game doesn't just vanish. There were only a few games that made me obsessed like that I also had to start the game at least 5 times from the beginning because I dropped it after dying too much and getting penalized so much that I just kept dying. I didn't even get far enough to reach the point where you can get rid of the penalties.

It's kinda funny how I watched evangelion and end of evangelion like 5 years ago and only had a slight interest in its message after watching it. But I recently discovered the cut song from end of evangelion and somehow that made me really hyperfixated on eva as a whole. Shortly thereafter I started watching stuff about it here on youtube and ended up watching this video. Not only I found a great song to listen to (and to potentially learn the piano version of it that shiro sagisu made that is found in the EVANGELION piano forte book since I play the piano) but that I found a really great video about eva, and I'm glad I ended up finding it :).

I had to have a lie down immediately after finishing Signalis. When I awoke, I found myself needing to understand. I began to teach myself German. I scoured online archives and dove head first into heated discussion threads. Whenever my mind starts to wander, I eventually find myself back on the Penrose. This game is a necronomicon, eldritch knowledge that can never be unlearned.

End of Evangelion is interesting from the perspective of a shinji hater, which I originally was. I watched the show for the first time in like 2019, and was staunchly against Shinji and in favor of Asuka. Seeing everyone berate Shinji for what a monster and a hypocrite he's been was cathartic, and I always saw End of Evangelion from Asuka's perspective. I firmly had none of Shinji's problems and pretty much all of Asuka's, and so End of Evangelion felt like an attack on me, because it's an attack on Asuka. I watched the initial video about 25 & 26 when it came out, and it stands in my view as the best thematic analysis of the show, and I was able to much better understand and sympathize with Shinji. I've re-watched the show 3 times and EOE twice in the 5 years since, having finished my most recent rewatch literally yesterday. I wanted to revisit the 25/26 video because it's great, and saw that this was uploaded. I learned a hell of a lot more about the cutting room floor than I knew before, and having my perspective of Shinji go from "this kid sucks" to "he's not trying his best, but he's trying something" to now get slammed back to "hey no yeah he definitely wasn't choking Asuka on the beach to check if she's real" has been fun.

I rarely comment, but I'm high enough to speak: I wanted to disagree with this video hard: like really hard. I didn't want to accept what it said about me that I relate to shinji even at his worst. That I was just like some of the people anno was talking to. But I realize even there, I can still get up, and try again. No one worths me a damn thing, but I want them to know I wanted to be better, even just a little.
